Mitochondria Masterclass

Course Description

Mitochondria were introduced to most of us in school as “the powerhouse of the cell” — a kidney-shaped organelle that makes energy. That description massively undersells what mitochondria actually do. Beyond generating roughly 90% of the body’s ATP, mitochondria act as metabolic sensors, immune system regulators, and controllers of programmed cell death (apoptosis). When mitochondrial health declines, the downstream effects touch nearly every chronic condition seen in functional medicine practice — insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, fertility issues, thyroid dysfunction, autoimmunity, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, neurodegeneration, and accelerated aging.

This masterclass, part of the AIC Functional Medicine Training Program, builds a complete, practical framework for assessing and restoring mitochondrial health. It starts with the three-phase rejuvenation model — mitophagy (clearing dysfunctional mitochondria), biogenesis (building new ones), and optimization (fueling and protecting the ones you have) — and the cellular pathways that regulate each phase: AMPK, Sirtuin1, mTOR, PGC1-alpha, and the PINK1/Parkin pathway that tags damaged mitochondria for removal. From there, the session covers what damages mitochondria in daily life (processed food, chronic stress, non-native EMF exposure, certain medications like statins and antibiotics, environmental toxins, and circadian mismatch), how to test for mitochondrial dysfunction using organic acid testing (the India-accessible Neutrifit test) and nutrient panels, and a full sequenced protocol: diet and structured water, movement matched to each rejuvenation phase (HIIT, zone 2, strength training), sleep and circadian alignment, sunlight exposure and red light therapy/photobiomodulation, cold thermogenesis, EMF and toxin reduction, and finally targeted supplementation (CoQ10, PQQ, NAD/NMN boosters, urolithin A, resveratrol, carnitine, alpha lipoic acid) layered in only after the foundational work is done.

The depth, terminology, and case-based teaching are calibrated for a practitioner audience, though informed patients who want a clinical-depth understanding of mitochondrial health are welcome to enroll.

What You’ll Learn?

  • Why mitochondria are far more than "the powerhouse of the cell" — their role as metabolic sensors, immune regulators, and drivers of apoptosis
  • The three-phase mitochondrial rejuvenation framework: mitophagy (cleanup), biogenesis (building new mitochondria), and optimization (fueling existing ones) — and why skipping straight to supplements without cleanup first can backfire
  • The five key regulatory pathways — AMPK, Sirtuin1, mTOR, PGC1-alpha, and PINK1/Parkin — what triggers each, and which supplements or lifestyle inputs activate them
  • Early clinical signs of mitochondrial dysfunction: unexplained fatigue, brain fog, cognitive decline, muscle weakness, hormonal imbalance, and premature signs of aging
  • How to test for mitochondrial health using organic acid testing (lactate/pyruvate ratio, 8-OHdG oxidative stress marker, CoQ10/carnitine cellular levels) and when genetic SNP testing adds value
  • What damages mitochondria: processed food and sugar, chronic inflammation, non-native EMF exposure, statins and other common medications, environmental toxins, and circadian mismatch
  • Diet and hydration strategy for mitochondrial fueling: clean/hydrolyzed protein, polyphenols and phytochemicals, healthy fats, the gut-mitochondria axis, and structured water
  • Movement prescription matched to each rejuvenation phase: HIIT and fasting for mitophagy, zone 2 and endurance training for biogenesis, daily movement and breath work for optimization
  • Sleep, circadian alignment, sunlight exposure, and red light therapy/photobiomodulation as core mitochondrial support strategies
  • Cold thermogenesis and other hormetic stressors, and how they trigger mitochondrial resilience pathways
  • Practical strategies to reduce EMF and environmental toxin load in daily life and clinical recommendations
  • Targeted mitochondrial supplementation — CoQ10, PQQ, NAD/NMN, urolithin A, resveratrol, carnitine, alpha lipoic acid — matched to phase and patient presentation, with real case discussion from practitioner Q&A

Nearly every chronic condition a functional medicine practitioner sees — metabolic dysfunction, autoimmunity, infertility, neurodegeneration, unexplained fatigue — has mitochondrial dysfunction somewhere in its root-cause complex. Yet most practitioners were taught mitochondria as a single high-school diagram and nothing more.

This masterclass gives you the complete clinical picture: how to recognize mitochondrial dysfunction, how to test for it, and how to rebuild it in the right sequence — clean up first, build new mitochondria second, fuel and protect third — as part of the AIC Functional Medicine Training Program. Informed patients auditing this course will walk away with a clearer, evidence-grounded picture too — but the training is built, first, for the practitioner in the room.
