Heavy metals and other toxins are now unavoidable — accumulating in industrial byproducts, food, water, dental work, cosmetics, and even vaccines — and their effects compound synergistically rather than simply adding up. Two toxins at individually “safe” doses can be lethal together. Yet most practitioners have no structured framework for testing, sequencing, or safely detoxifying patients who are carrying this burden.
This masterclass, part of the AIC Functional Medicine Training Program, builds that framework from the ground up. It covers the five key heavy metals — mercury, aluminum, lead, arsenic, and cadmium — their common sources, characteristic symptom patterns, and their mechanistic links to mitochondrial dysfunction and autoimmunity (including how impaired mitochondrial function weakens the lysosomal cleanup process that keeps the immune system from reacting to the body’s own cellular debris). It then addresses the genuinely difficult question of testing: no single method (blood, urine, hair, stool, saliva, or biopsy) gives a fully accurate picture of total body burden, and the session teaches practitioners how to combine test results, symptom patterns, and clinical judgment to make sound treatment decisions anyway.
The core of the masterclass is the four-phase detoxification framework — how toxins move from fat-soluble to more reactive/water-soluble forms, get bound to a carrier (glutathione or a chelator), and are excreted — and why detox protocols must be built in reverse order: excretory pathways (gut, liver, kidneys) must be working well before mobilization begins, or symptoms can significantly worsen. From there, the session covers binders versus chelators (EDTA, DMSA, DMPS, modified citrus pectin, humic/fulvic acid), the tradeoffs between oral, IV, and rectal suppository routes, and a tiered protocol structure — gentle, intermediate, and advanced — illustrated with real case studies showing heavy metal levels and symptoms tracked over 3–6 months.
The depth, terminology, and case-based teaching are calibrated for a practitioner audience, though informed patients who want a clinical-depth understanding of heavy metal toxicity are welcome to enroll.
Every patient today is carrying some level of heavy metal burden — the question is whether it’s high enough to be driving or aggravating their condition, and whether the practitioner has a safe, sequenced way to address it.
This masterclass gives practitioners a practical framework for testing (imperfect as every method is), understanding the real mechanistic links between heavy metals, mitochondrial health, and autoimmunity, and building a tiered detox protocol that mobilizes toxins without overwhelming the body’s ability to clear them, as part of the AIC Functional Medicine Training Program. Informed patients auditing this course will walk away with a clearer, evidence-grounded picture too — but the training is built, first, for the practitioner in the room
