Metabolomics (Organic Acid Tests- OAT) Masterclass

Course Description

A standard blood panel shows what’s happening in the blood and plasma — vitamin levels, complete blood count, basic markers. Metabolomics goes a level deeper: it looks at the small molecules — metabolites — produced as byproducts of metabolism at the cellular level, revealing whether the body is actually able to use the nutrients it’s given, clear the toxins it’s exposed to, and keep its gut microbiome in balance, often years before any of that shows up as a diagnosable disease.

This masterclass, part of the AIC Functional Medicine Training Program, teaches practitioners how to read and apply a comprehensive metabolomic/organic acid panel (using the India-accessible Neutrifit test as the working example). Dr. Apurva Reddy walks through each section of the panel in turn: vitamin and mineral metabolism (B12, B-complex, magnesium, zinc), mitochondrial energy production markers (citrate, malate, succinate, pyruvate, and the antioxidants CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, and carnitine that support them), carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism, gut dysbiosis markers that flag yeast/Candida and Clostridia overgrowth (and their downstream effects on neurotransmitter conversion and behavior), oxalate metabolism, amino acid and protein sufficiency, and detoxification markers tied to glutathione status and toxin exposure (including plastic byproduct markers).

Throughout, the emphasis is practical: how to read the panel’s color-coded interpretation, correlate marker patterns with patient history and symptoms rather than treating any single number as absolute, and build a sequenced, personalized protocol — starting with foundational nutrient support and detox, then addressing gut infections, using targeted antimicrobials and probiotic strains matched to what the panel shows. A full pediatric case study (a teenager with Crohn’s disease) walks through how a metabolomics-informed protocol was built and tracked over 3 and 6 months.
